1. Conflict management
Common issues and problems:
It is well known that problems are always evident in a community. These are inevitable and there is really no way to make them disappear completely. There are, however, ways to lessen them and solve some of these. We observed a few problems that we would want to work on for the betterment of the community.
Trash is one of the most common issues in any community and unfortunately, Sun Valley is not an exception. Improper garbage disposal could lead to the clogging of drainages and creeks. If this problem continues to build up, it would lead to flooding if a natural disaster happens to occur in the area since there would be no place for the water to be drained. Improper waste disposal also leads to pollution in which it may affect the environment as well as the health of the members of the community. If the members of the community catch a sickness, the community won’t be as productive.
Another problem within this community is small scale crimes. One of the members of the community mentioned that crime does happen in the community but the crimes aren’t really big, its mostly small crimes. We noticed that there are only two public transport stops. There are also only a few access points to enter and exit the community and they are all located on the West Service Road, which is a very busy and small road. With this said, we can assume that traffic is a problem in the community. Few access points lead to the build-up of traffic in the said area which leads to the congestion of cars on the West Service road and the cars entering and exiting the community.
Solutions:
Problems related to the community is difficult to solve due to the fact that many people are being affected by it, and norms cannot easily be changed. It takes the hard work of the community leaders and the active participation and cooperation of the community for change to occur. Despite this, we came up with the following solutions that would best benefit the community.
-
Garbage Disposal
As mentioned above, there is a problem regarding garbage disposal. To solve this issue, we propose our very own business concept; the SegreBlock. The SegreBlock is a segregation bin that gives out compost and all the biodegradable wastes become fertilizer after a while. We plan for each household to own 2 SegreBlocks, a biodegradable one and a non-biodegradable one. We also want the SegreBlocks to be placed in various areas in the community.
This will not only benefit to the lessening of trash, but in the lessening of the foul odor that the wastes emit as well. This is because of the Carbon Filter within the SegreBlock, which catches the Ammonia, which is what causes the foul odor.
-
Law Enforcement
In order to ensure the safety of the community, we are sporting the addition of security guards in order to carry out these laws more efficiently. With this, the policemen are able to work more competently, since they have more ground covered. A report made by Inimai M. Chettiar shows that when New York has decided to increase the number of police officers patrolling around, the crime rate has decreased by 5%. This proves that additional policemen, combined with a strong management technique, crime rate will go down.

Traffic Reduction Scheme (T.R.S.)
Due to its busy lifestyle, Sun Valley is undoubtedly a place prone to traffic, especially during rush hours. In connection to the Law Enforcement plan, we are proposing the idea to strictly apply the numerous traffic laws that the community already has to help reduce accidents during these heavy traffic scenarios.
Public Utility Vehicles or PUVs can cause traffic as well due to their increase in numbers, and their stops being on the same road that every other vehicle passes through. We recommend the creation of these stops at a separate location and not on the road to avoid the clogging of the already narrow road.
Clogging, especially in the entrances/exits, is a problem experienced by this village, among others. Avoiding this is difficult to achieve, however, we have concluded that the best way to eliminate this is to add more gates around the boundaries of the village. This idea is very much notorious with other villages due to its higher risk value in safety, however, in coordination with the Law Enforcement plan, we are able to achieve our goal without sacrificing the safety of the community.
