SEGREBLOCK

The SegreBlock, is a product which is a combination of a segregation bin and a compost bin.  Waste greatly affects a community's standard and trash seen in the community affects the appearance and the overall aesthetic view of the community. The fundamental cause of all this, is because there is an inadequacy in the required bins for the citizens to throw their trash. There are many factors that affect why people litter, this includes people who tend to litter when there is a lack of trash bins. Another factor that affects this is the lack of discipline in some people. This product aims to undertake the issue of having litter in the community through a segregation bin with the added feature of having a compost bin at the same time.

Segregation of waste and its proper disposal is very important especially in a big community. The act of segregation must not be taken for granted. SegreGlow & Co. hopes to ensure that Sun Valley is provided with enough SegreBlocks to sustain a clean and trash free environment. The segregation bin allows consumers to utilize the role of biodegradable waste to its potential use as compost or organic fertilizer. Fertilizers boost plant growth and/or renew mediocre soil. This will not only benefit the quality of the environment but it will also benefit the citizens especially those in the farming/planting business.

This product contains carbon filters to provide the consumers odorless compost bins along the process of composting. This prevents the unwanted pungent odor of Nitrogen Hydrogen, also known as Ammonia or Hydrogen Nitride (NH3). During the process, Oxygen (O), along with bacteria make the breakdown of the components easier. To speed up the process, air holes are added to allow the flow of air into the compost bin, and a pedal is added to "toss" the organic waste to encourage equal airflow throughout the compost. With these features, homeowners are provided with a faster composting process and at the same time, they have odorless compost bins. SegreGlow & Co. ensures that consumers are provided with the best comfort when composting their organic wastes.

Unlike other segregation bins, the SegreBlock allows biodegradable waste to turn into compost inside the bin itself making it more convenient for everyone. This benefits both the consumers and the community directly in properly segregating trash, and at the same time taking the opportunity of making the most of the organic wastes. With the trash reduced, the community will have the upper hand in mitigating heavy rainfall and prevent flooding since waste is a big factor that causes it. Improper trash disposal sometimes clogs the drainages causing a higher chance of flood.

The consumers who would benefit from the SegreBlock would be the homeowners, since it improves the sanitation of their area and their surroundings. Segregation helps, not only the community, but also the nation itself. Every piece of trash we throw on the floor becomes part of the remaining 89% of trash which are remained unsegregated, and thrown in the landfill. Only 11% of the total amount of waste in Metro Manila are segregated, and from this, the waste is put into good use of which it becomes recycled to be used again. The SegreBlock aims to segregate the two main categories of waste, Biodegradable, and Non-biodegradable in order to ease the process and avoid trash being dumped in the toxic and hazardous landfill.

Biodegradable waste or organic waste decomposes over a few months to a year considering distinct elements namely temperature, water, moisture, and oxygen levels. These materials accommodate, mainly organic matter such as food scraps, plant trimmings, paper, wood and grass clippings. Non-biodegradable waste or inorganic waste do not decompose over a short period of time. Materials or waste such as plastics, glass bottles and metals will often remain completely intact in the environment for many years. In fact, items like glass bottles may never biodegrade, because these items are usually made from chemicals or minerals that do not break down. Aluminum foil could be buried next to a piece of paper in a back yard and it will look almost like it did the day it was buried — while the piece of paper will be decaying or maybe even gone depending upon how much time the process was given. Upon segregation of Biodegradable and Non-Biodegradable waste, this trash goes to the transfer station, then it either goes to the landfill (decompose), recycling station, or if in the worst case scenario, incinerators. However most of this trash is mostly carelessly dumped into natural habitats of animals such as bodies of water, or bodies of land (natural). This is an action that requires extreme note on the scenarios following these actions. Endangerment of species (due to detrimental, unhealthy and toxic waste misplaced in natural habitats of given species), intense reduction of community standard, and possibilities of disease infested pests invading left out, and unsegregated trash is inevitable; proper disposal is one of the many factors next to segregating waste which causes these avoidable and avertible insanely possible. One of the many best things we can do is pick up the litter and properly throw it away, through proper segregating bins to ensure proper disposal. Through this, by striving hard, and pushing ourselves to include simple yet effective actions of segregation we can help ourselves and the overall community itself.
